In June, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced their decision to prohibit high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) in the state of New York. The DEC has been evaluating HVHF for nearly seven years utilizing scientific literature, public health experts, field visits, environmental authorities, and more. After an immense amount of debate, the department found that there are no feasible or prudent alternatives that would adequately avoid or minimize adverse environmental impacts and address the scientific uncertainties and risks to public health. You can read more about the DEC’s decision in their Findings Statement.
