Job Opening: Program Assistant (Part-time)

NYLCV’s educational affiliate, the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (NYLCVEF), is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to engaging, educating, and empowering New Yorkers to be effective advocates for the environment.

In partnership with Chispa, a national program of the League of Conservation Voters focused on developing strong environmental advocates in Latino communities, NYLCVEF recently launched the Clean Buses for Healthy Niños campaign. Already active in nine states, the Campaign is calling for states to invest their portion of the Volkswagen (VW) Settlement in electric school buses.

In 2015, VW was caught having intentionally rigged vehicles to thwart emissions tests, releasing illegal levels of noxious pollution into the air for years. Settlement funds are already earmarked toward transition programs for electric vehicles, including electric buses and EV charging stations.

NYLCVEF will organize a groundswell of local advocates from New York communities to pressure Governor Cuomo and the NYS Department of Conservation to protect the health of our children and combat climate by using these funds to transition away from dirty diesel school buses. The campaign involves building strong relationships with community leaders, local advocacy groups, schools, health and faith-based organizations, and more to build out a strong, diverse coalition of support for electric school buses.

This is a part time, temporary position (one-year).

A weekly stipend will be provided.

Job Description:

  • Assist NYLCVEF Director of Programs and New York City Program Director with developing and implementing the Clean Buses Campaign.
  • Work with NYLCVEF staff to identify and recruit advocates and community leaders through phone calls, one-on-one meetings, presentations, canvassing, and other outreach methods.
  • Build relationships with community organizations, labor unions, health groups, schools, faith-based groups, etc. who can work in partnership with NYLCVEF to advance shared goals.
  • Engage and grow a coalition of grassroots and community leaders from target areas to gain attention from decision-makers and the media.
  • Represent NYLCVEF at community events and meetings with decision-makers and community leaders, as needed.

Responsibilities:
The Program Assistant will report to the Director of Programs and is responsible for the following duties:

Program Coordination (30%):

  • Work with and support NYLCVEF’s NYC Program Director and Director of Programs to implement and track program goals, including organizing policy forums, monitoring and updating the campaign timeline, and providing accurate and timely support to partner groups.
  • Follow and report on the State’s activities related to the VW settlement and electric school buses.
  • Identify opportunities to build new relationships and promote the campaign with a broader network.
  • Provide input in the crafting of communications materials relevant to the campaign.

Organizing and Outreach (50%):

  • Engage, educate, and activate a grassroots base of community leaders and volunteers in target neighborhoods to advocate for electric school buses.
  • Work with partners to develop civic engagement and advocacy tool kits to mobilize supporters.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with partners in New York State to assist with accomplishing campaign goals.
  • Assist the NYC Program Director with organizing meetings with grass-tops leaders, including local and state decision-makers.
  • Liaise and coordinate between NYLCVEF staff and partner groups to establish and meet shared goals, plan meetings, and track progress toward campaign goals.

General Administration (20%):

  • Participate in regular organizational or team staff meetings to connect campaign and program work with the broader family of organizations.
  • Work with Director of Programs to track deliverables, budget, and outreach goals for grant reporting.
  • Maintain efficient and easily accessible program files.
  • Schedule phone and in-person meetings between NYLCVEF and partner groups.
  • Take minutes during partner meetings and conduct follow-up as needed.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in grassroots community organizing, outreach, or communications.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in sustainability, environmental justice, public health, or transportation issues, as well as advancing the health outcomes of underserved communities, including children in New York State.
  • Strong verbal communication skills in English and in Spanish, highly organized, a good listener, and an ability to speak respectfully with diverse communities.
  • Skilled in Google Suite and Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, and attention to detail.
  • Willingness for daytime travel within the five boroughs of NYC and occasionally to Albany.
