Energy And Climate Change

It is beyond doubt that human action -- primarily the release of greenhouse gases resulting from the burning of fossil fuels -- is affecting the Earth's climate.

Global warming has the potential to bring climate changes to New York State that will impact our economy and quality of life. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimated that average temperatures in the state could increase as much as 9.5 degrees by 2070, giving New York a climate roughly equivalent to that of modern-day Georgia. This will affect a variety of industries and damage low-lying coastal areas.

Electricity generation and transportation represent 24 percent and 32 percent of New York State's greenhouse gas emissions respectively. It is clear that any solution to global warming must include a robust effort to control emissions from these important sectors.
