    Eating Green In The Workplace

    The current battle over the environment has many fronts – from the halls congress and board rooms of major corporations, to your humble office cubicle. When you go to take a break from your hard work, don’t take a break on going green – with a few easy steps, you can make sure your lunch won’t add to your ecological footprint.

    Managing

    If you’re a workplace manager, you have ample opportunities to help your employees make a positive impact. By providing reusable dishes, mugs, silverware and glasses, you can keep your employees from using wasteful disposable products. Plastic utensils and paper cups and plates may seem convenient, but they don’t go to good use. Items like paper cups don’t get recycled, they get thrown in landfills, thanks to their plastic content. And, the more you use them, the more you contribute to deforestation.

    If you don’t have the power to persuade your higher-ups to provide these much-needed items, you can bring them from home. By stashing your own dishware in your desk, you can avoid the trap of disposable products.

    Managers can also go a long way toward reducing their environmental impact by switching to eco-friendly products, such as coffee, tea and local foods for catering. These industries can put a serious strain on nature, given the process of transporting and manufacturing popular products on a large scale. Buying the right brands, and purchasing from the right sources, can help correct that.

    Plastics

    When you get thirsty at the office, stay away from bottled water. Take a trip to the water fountain instead! Plastic water bottles contribute to global warming through the production process, and all too often wind up improperly disposed in landfills. In addition, in rare cases the plastic containers can produce toxins – while you probably don’t have to worry about that, it’s certainly another reason to avoid them!

    When transporting food to and from the office, don’t use a plastic bag, or any disposable items – bring reusable bags or containers, instead. Plastic bags have caused a crisis for the environment. In fact, United Nations officials have condemned the proliferation of these harmful objects. Plastic bags wind up in landfills, in oceans and parks, where they continue to do damage to delicate ecosystems. Discarded bags frequently choke animals on land and at sea, and contaminate our resources. Further, plastic comes from petroleum, a fast-depleting resource that takes a constant toll on the planet. One report in the 90s found that the plastic industry causes 14% of all toxic emissions!

    Reusable bags can solve this issue, as can reusable containers. A threat remains, however, in the plastic used to make these containers. While these items don’t go to landfills like bags, they can still contain harmful substances such as Bisphenol-A (BPA) which mimics hormones and could potentially cause a number of adverse effects.
